- What make you start this project?
We developed the script this summer by mixing a synopsis and a text.
The text of Lucie, an “absurd” one, “Carrots”: ” Let’s fall in uselessness to reverse our world”. And the synopsis of a Brussels chronicle: a story of hold-up men which one would only see the appointments in every parts of the city, in coffees, deserted warehouses… All the action wasn’t shown, men were just talking about it in the idles periods.
- What the film is speaking about?
It’s the story of the friendship between Nau and Nabu, the broken love of Nau and Ded, the erotic nights of Nabu. It’s the story of banks hold-up and a visited prison. It’s the story of a group who wants to empty banks safes to put the System down and a young acrobat who would like to redistribute money. It’s the story of people who are observing each other and the escape of a political prisoner.
All these characters, groups, desires, cross and bind around Nau and Nabu, towards ideals, others and society.
- A summary?
Nau and Nabu developed a common taste for games and tests in any kind. These games help them not to bore to death at work, at “Ares Enterprise”. They play constantly. Nau has always an exact idea of time as her number of steps. Tests of personality, psychotechnical, plays of language and physics: their daily exchanges. Their nights are differents, those of Nau are solitary and those of Nabu very erotic: she often show them in video to passioned guys: “a debtor”, “a bear” like many eccentric stories.
Nau and Ded fall in love one evening. They have in common, an astonishing agility and determination. But a painful past, the absurd ideas of Nau and their rising love ruined Ded agility: police force arrest him during a hold up. Nau who didn’t know anything of his activities, has now only one idea: to free him. Nabu tries to dissuade her, the challenge is huge and Ded too fragile, but Nau meets Hic, a young acrobat who helps her to pass the first wall of the prison. Inside, through the opening of his door, Ded tells her that he doesn’t want to leave prison, to live in escape, he wants to remain free, to purge his sentence. Despaired, Nau leaves him in his cell and releases a political prisoner.
This crazy night changes the ideas and the life of Nau. But also Nabu’s and Ded friends. At the bottom of her bed, Nau is discourage. Nabu enters by the window and slips under the feather bed of Nau: their discussion continues…
- Some esthetic positions?
Yes. With the sound mainly. 3/4 of the film occur in streets and coffees, with thus a very important background. If the sound recording is done at the same time as image, it is called “direct sound”. In the script there is political chattering and I was a little frightened by the equation direct sound + speeches + light tone = moralist movie. Most of the time it’s true. This dynamics will be broken by a silent shooting, the sound will be made after the editing, in studio.
The principal idea is to tell the actions rather than to show them. And then to make like Jacques Tourneur, to alternate a speaking sequence with a moving one.
- From which do these odd names come?
The names of the main characters are almost all of the diminutives of names of Greek mythology:
NAU /Naupacté . NABU /Nabû . DED/Daídalos . MIN /Minốtauros . PAS /Pasipháê . SEL /Selếnê
DUC /Ductus . HIC /Ikaros . and the Árês Enterprise.
